No. 11 Women's Tennis Falls At No. 4 UCLA, 6-1

Feb. 27, 2010

LOS ANGELES, Calif.- No. 11 Stanford dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 4 UCLA on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles, kicking off its Southern California road trip against the first of two top-10 teams.

Friday's contest was a non-counting Pac-10 match. The squads will meet again on Apr. 3 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium, with that result factoring into the conference standings.

UCLA (10-1) set the tone in doubles, taking two out of three matches to earn an early 1-0 advantage. After both teams split results at court Nos. 2 and 3, the Bruins clinched the point when the No. 11th-ranked team of Andrea Remynse and Yasmin Schnack upset second-ranked Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette 8-5 at court No. 1.

UCLA carried that momentum into singles, getting its first two points from a pair of freshmen at Nos. 6 and 4, respectively, to take a 3-0 lead.

Maya Johansson defeated Carolyn McVeigh 6-1, 6-4 on court five to provide the clincher and make it 4-0.

Stanford (7-1) avoided the shutout when Barte edged Yasmin Schnack 7-5, 2-6, (10-7) at the No. 1 position.

The Cardinal will look to rebound on Saturday, Feb. 27, against No. 10 USC. Match time is set for noon.
