Cathedral City, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team split on day two of the Cathedral City Classic, falling in an extra innings heartbreaker to No. 16 Ohio State, 8-7, in eight innings but rebounding with a 4-2 win over Syracuse on Saturday evening.

No. 16 Ohio State 8, Oregon State 7

Junior Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a pair of runs to pace the Beavers’ offense, but Oregon State came up just short, falling to No. 16 Ohio State, 8-7, in an extra innings heartbreaker.

Oregon State opened up the game, scoring three runs on one hit. Roderfeld hit her second home run of the season to clear the bases after sophomore Ashley Sanchez (Alameda, Calif.) led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Mary Claire Brenner (Portland, Ore.) walked to put runners on the corners before a throw to third resulted in an error, allowing Sanchez to score. Roderfeld then bombed one to left center on the next pitch seen.

The Beavers tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third on a RBI double by Roderfeld before sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) tallied a pair of RBI for herself on a double to right center, giving Oregon State the 6-0 lead.

The Buckeyes put a run on the board in the top of the fourth on a RBI double, adding another on the sixthon a solo leadoff home run to cut the lead to 6-2.

Oregon State added another run in the bottom of the sixth with another Roderfeld RBI with a single up the middle to score senior Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.), who earned a one-out single.

But Ohio State answered back in a big way in the top of the seventh, tying the game on a Rachael Shepherd RBI single before a grand slam by Alicia Herron. The Buckeyes were able to manufacture another run in the top of the eighth, while the Beavers left their runner on third as the game ended.

Hall was charged with the complete game loss after fanning seven, making her record 3-8. Megan Miller, who came in relief for Melanie Nichols after 2.1 innings, earned the win, improving to 4-1.
