Feb. 28, 2010
STANFORD, CALIF. -
The California Golden Bears women's gymnastics team finished fourth at the Stanford Quad Meet at Stanford. California scored 188.825, trailing Stanford (196.525), North Carolina (192.975), and Eastern Michigan (190.125).
It was a tough meet for the shorthanded Bears. Cal's top all-arounder of the season, freshman Madisyn O'Brien, was restricted to just one event, the bars, recovering from an ankle injury. O'Brien earned a 9.60 for her lone performance. Freshmen Nikki Lew and Stina Olivere had the top marks for Cal on the bars, both earning a 9.675.
The Bears only had five floor performances, but it still managed the top event for the team. Junior Avery Gee once again delivered with her routine, earning a 9.825, the top mark of the season on the floor for the Bears. Freshman Mariesah Pierce had a tenth point neutral deduction take down her score, but still earned a solid 9.625, a mark matched by sophomore Alex Leggitt.
Avery Gee was the Bears sole contender in the All-Around. She earned a combined score of 38.350 in the four events. She finished fifth among the all-around competitors.
The Bears will be back in action this Friday, March 5, for the second of three straight Northern California meets. They will be heading to San Jose State to compete in a tri-meet that will also feature the Stanford Cardinal. The competition begins at 7 p.m.
