Third-Ranked Bruins Fall to #16 Ohio State

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Junior Monica Harrison had two of the Bruins' six hits, but third-ranked UCLA fell to #16 Ohio State 7-0 on Sunday at the Cathedral City Classic.
The Bruins left 10 on base on a half dozen hits and four walks. Junior Donna Kerr started and allowed three runs, three hits and two walks with one strikeout in 2/3 of an inning. Senior Megan Langenfeld tossed 4 2/3 frames, giving up four runs (two earned), five hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Sophomore Aleah Macon retired the final two batters in the sixth.
The Buckeyes struck first with three in the bottom of the opening frame. Sam Marder led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single up the middle by Courtney Pruner. One out later, Whitney Cooper hit a three-run homer to left to put the Buckeyes up 3-0.
Ohio State broke it open with three in the fifth. Pruner singled to open the inning and was pinch-run for by Julia Pecina. One out later, Cooper singled to left to put a pair aboard. Another out later, Brittany Goodchild singled to left to bring home Pecina to make it 4-0. Leah Ledford then reached on a fielding error, allowing Goodchild to move to third and Cooper to score to up the lead to 5-0. Ohio State then executed a double steal, with Ledford taking second and Goodchild swiping home to make it 6-0.
In the sixth, the Buckeyes made it 7-0 on a one-out homer to left by Marder.
The Bruins had their chances, but left the bases loaded in the fifth and two apiece in the first, fourth and sixth.
