Cal Sixth After First Day of USC Collegiate Invitational
March 1, 2010
WESTLAKE VILLAGE - Cal finished 36 holes of golf at the USC Collegiate Invitational on Monday with an even-par team score of 568 and will head into the final 18 holes on Tuesday in sixth place and 12 shots off the lead posted by fellow Pac-10 school Oregon (556, -12). The Golden Bears were eight shots better (280) on the second 18 holes than on the first (288) to move from 11th place after the first round to their current sixth-place spot at the end of the day's action.
Arizona State (561, -7), Pepperdine (565, -3), UCLA (566, -2) and host USC (566, -2) follow Oregon to make up the top five of a field that features seven teams ranked in the nation's top 25 and 12 among the country's top 50.
'There are a bunch of good teams here,' confirmed head coach Steve Desimone. 'It's still close and we're within 12 shots of the lead. On this golf course, anything could happen. It will be an interesting and fun day tomorrow.'
The Bears had a difficult start on a day were the action was delayed for approximately half an hour due to frost. The Bears clubs did not seem to thaw out immediately as Cal was near the bottom of the team standings throughout most of the first 18 holes, before making a run at the end of the first round.
'It was quite a comeback,' said Desimone. 'It was a little unusual to see us at the bottom of the standings during the first round, but we finished the first round really well and the kept playing well the rest of the day. I really have to give our guys credit. I'm proud of them the way they fought back after a rough start.'
Chad Vivolo posted the top 36-hole score for the Bears on Monday with a day that reflected that of the team. Vivolo is 10th in the individual standings after the first day, moving up 22 spots over the final 18 holes. He shot one-over par 72 on the first 18 holes but came back with a 67 that was the Bears' best on the day and featured six birdies on the second 18 to finish with a 36-hole total of three-under par.
Eric Mina is tied for 17th after improving by a pair of strokes during his second round. Mina improved his one-over 72 on the first 18 holes to a one-under 70 over his final 18.
Stephen Hale is the only Bear to have a day that was opposite of the team, shooting a two-under 69 on the first 18 holes but unable to match that round with a four-over 75 on the second 18 for a 36-hole total of 144. Hale is tied for 31st.
James Coré (76-75 - 151) is tied for 68th place competing as an individual. The final 18 holes of the event are scheduled for Tuesday with the first ball scheduled off the tee at 7:30 a.m. PST.
