Jesolva, Morgan Invited to Attend U.S. U-23 National Team Camp
March 1, 2010
BERKELEY - California juniors defender/midfielder Megan Jesolva and forward Alex Morgan have been selected to participate in a training camp with the U.S. under-23 national team, it was announced recently. The U-23 head coach Bill Irwin will bring 24 players to the training camp in Sunrise, Fla., from March 7-14.
'We are all pleased for Alex and Megan,' Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. 'They are great ambassadors for our Cal program, and they are very deserving of this call up. This experience will be invaluable to them.'
In 2009, Jesolva suffered a knee injury that limited her time on the field to just 11 games, seven of which she started. The La Mirada, Calif., native still dished out two assists - the gamewinners against Texas A&M (Sept. 4, 2009) and Portland State (Sept. 11, 2009).
'I'm really excited to be invited back after getting injured and not playing a lot this past season,' Jesolva said. 'I'm looking forward to being apart of that team again.'
Last summer Jesolva traveled to England with the U.S. Under-23 national team for two games against the English U-23 squad. Jesolva saw significant playing time in each of the two matches - playing 70 minutes in 2-0 loss on July 4 and the entirety of the July 6 3-1 victory.
Irwin's roster reflects some of the top underclassmen in the college game, including five members of the U.S. team that won the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile: defender Liz Harkin, midfielders Eli Reed and Keelin Winters, and Cal's forward Alex Morgan, who won the Bronze Ball as the third most outstanding player of the tournament.
Morgan started the most recent full U.S. women's national team training camp in January at The Home Depot Center, but left with a hamstring injury after just three days. The Diamond Bar, Calif. native scored 14 goals with eight assists for the Golden Bears this season, helping her team second round of the NCAA Tournament, in which they fell to Florida State.
