UCLA's Dixon Named Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week
March 1, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- UCLA sophomore forward Jasmine Dixon was selected Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 22-28, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Jasmine Dixon (Long Beach, Calif.) was dominant in leading UCLA to two road victories over the weekend at Oregon State (75-53) and Oregon (91-75), averaging 24.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 70.4 percent from the field and adding recording 3.5 steals per game.
Dixon was unstoppable against the Ducks, scoring 31 points and grabbing 20 rebounds, three short of matching Oregon's rebounding efforts in the game. Posting career highs in both categories, Dixon became just the second player in UCLA women's basketball history to record a 30-point, 20-rebound outing and the first in 16 years. Former Bruin Natalie Williams had 32 points and 25 rebounds against Arizona State in 1994. Dixon was 11-for-17 from the floor and 9-for-14 from the free throw line.
Earlier in the week against the Beavers, Dixon had 17 points in 16 minutes of playing time as she was hampered by foul trouble. She was 8-for-10 from the floor and had a career-high five steals.
Dixon is the second player in the Pac-10 to record a 30-point, 20-rebound performance and the 13th player in the league to score 30+ points this season, joining Stanford sophomore forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas). A transfer from Rutgers, Dixon became eligible to play in late December and the Bruins have gone 16-4 with her in the lineup.
It is Dixon's first-career weekly selection, UCLA's 41st all-time Pac-10 Player of the Week selection and the Bruins' second this season. Freshman forward Markel Walker (Philadelphia, Pa.) was named Pac-10 Player of the Week on February 1.
Having already won the most league games since 1998-99, the Bruins close out the 2009-10 regular season against Arizona State on Thursday, March 4 and Arizona on Saturday, March 6 at Pauley Pavilion.
Also Nominated: Ify Ibekwe, Arizona; Danielle Orsillo, Arizona State; Gennifer Brandon, California; Kay;a Pedersen, Stanford; Ashley Corral, USC; Regina Rogers, Washington; April Cook , Washington State.
