60 Pac-10 Women's Swimmers Earn Spots in the 2010 NCAA Women's Swimming Championships

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- Sixty Pac-10 women’s swimmers have made the 2010 NCAA Women’s Swimming Championships in all 13 individual events and at least three teams will represent the Pac-10 in all four relay events, as the NCAA announced the Championship field this week. Every Pac-10 women’s swimming squad will be represented at the national championship meet, with ARIZONA leading the Conference with 16 swimmers. CALIFORNIA is next with 13, STANFORD has 10 entrants, USC is next with nine, UCLA with six, ARIZONA STATE with four, and OREGON STATE and WASHINGTON STATE with one apiece.
The newly minted Pac-10 Champion Stanford Cardinal will have representation in all four relays and holds the No. 1 seeds with the fastest time in the field for the 400-yard relay (3:12.83) and the 200-yard relay (1:28.27). Stanford swimmers hold the fastest time in the field in six of the 13 individual events, with senior Julia Smit holding the top time in three events, the 400-yard IM, the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard free. Smit currently holds the American and NCAA records in the 400-yard IM (3:53.23) and the 200-yard IM (1:52.31), which she set last week in Long Beach, Calif. at the Pac-10 Championships. Senior Elaine Breeden owns the fastest NCAA ‘A’ qualifying times in the 100-yard butterfly (51.24) in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.15). Sophomore Betsy Webb holds the top time in the field 50-yard free (22.04) and Junior Elizabeth Smith swam the fastest NCAA ‘A’ qualifying time in 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.65).
USC’s sophomore Katinka Hosszu holds the fastest NCAA ‘A’ cut time in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.71). Junior Presley Bard holds the second-fastest time in the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.80) and the third-fastest time (51.92) in the 100-yard backstroke.
