March 4, 2010

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Larry Scott, Commissioner of the Pac-10 Conference, announced today the appointment Gloria Nevarez as Senior Associate Commissioner and Senior Woman Administrator responsible for men's and women's basketball and overall sport management (except football). Nevarez joins the Pac-10 from the University of Oklahoma Athletics Department where she had significant responsibility for the leadership of both men's and women's athletics, and was the Senior Woman Administrator.

'We're excited to welcome Gloria to the Pac-10,' Scott said. 'She brings a depth and breadth of experience as a student-athlete and administrator across intercollegiate athletics and a fresh, dynamic perspective to the Pac-10. Her leadership will play a pivotal role in our mission of transforming the Pac-10 Conference.'

Nevarez, a University of Massachusetts basketball standout and U.C. Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law alum, has spent the last three years as Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of Oklahoma overseeing marketing, men's and women's basketball, track and field, softball, soccer, rowing and strength and conditioning as well as serving as the university's liaison for Title IX compliance and Big 12 governance issues. Before Oklahoma, Nevarez was Associate Commissioner/SWA for the West Coast Conference. She has served on the NCAA Management council and NCAA Committee on Athletic Certification. She has previously held positions in program management, compliance and legal affairs at U.C. Berkeley, and San Jose State University athletics departments and was an adjunct faculty member at the University of San Francisco.

'Since my days in law school at U.C. Berkeley, I've always been a huge admirer and fan of the Pac-10 Conference,' Nevarez said. 'Larry Scott and the new leadership team are injecting a level of excitement and ambition that promises to take the conference to an even higher level of performance, and I'm thrilled to be part of that team.'

The appointment is effective April 15, 2010. Nevarez will be based at conference headquarters in Walnut Creek, CA and will report to Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Kevin Weiberg.
