Cal Retakes Lead in Close Pac-10 Battle in Long Beach
March 5, 2010
LONG BEACH, Calif-- Ten points separate Bay Area rivals Cal and Stanford heading into the final day of the Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championships, with the Golden Bears holding a slim 570-560 lead after three days.
Stanford had led after Thursday's competition and through the first four events on Friday prior to Cal taking the lead following the 100 backstroke. Cal took the lead based on ranked scores, 1-16, in the two, eight-man finals.
Cal won three events on Friday, Stanford paced by Eugene Godsoe (100 back) and Bobby Bollier (400 IM) won twice. Stanford's Curtis Lovelace (100 breast) and Godsoe (100 fly) were each runners-up to Cal swimmers.
In the third to last event, Godsoe defended his title in the 100 backstroke with a time of 46.03, but the Cardinal trailed 512-499 for the first time. With two men in the finals of the three-meter diving finals last week in Federal Way, WA, Brent Eichenseer (third) and Tommy Fraychineaud (eighth), Stanford closed to within 530-526, before Cal won the 400 medley relay and extended its lead back up to 10.
Bollier and freshman Matt Thompson won two of the three finals of the 400 IM, with top-15 national times. Bollier won the “A” finals with a mark of 3:45.05, while Thompson after a time of 3:49.27, posted the “B” finals best mark at 3:45.06. The marks rank 5-6 in the Stanford annals. Bollier is Stanford's first champion in the event since Markus Rogan in 2002.
Godsoe was the runner-up as well, in the 100 butterfly, to Cal's Tom Shields, tallying a mark of 46.10, nearly fourth-tenths behind Shields (45.75). David Dunford won the “B” finals with a time of 47.62, one of three Cardinal in the consolation finals.
Curtis Lovelace was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke, one of the fastest events of the championships, featuring all eight swimmers ranked in the national top-25. Lovelace's time was 52.51.
Stanford placed three swimmers in the finals of the 200 free, placing 5-7, paced by Morgan Priestley's time of 1:35.38 for fifth place.
