Softball Defeats UC Davis in Walk-Off Fashion

March 5, 2010

Fullerton, Calif. – Sophomore Nikki Chandler (Houston, Texas) belted one down the left field line for her first hit of the season to boost the Oregon State softball team (6-11) to a 5-3 walk-off decision over UC Davis (6-8) on Friday evening.

Sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) earned her second multi-hit game of the day, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, while freshman Lea Cavestany (Pittsburg, Calif.)  tallied another single to finish the game with a 3-for-4 stat line.

Oregon State took the early 1-0 lead after one inning on a RBI double by junior Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.), scoring sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.), who reached on a two-out walk before advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch by UC Davis pitcher Dana Waldusky.

Cavestany put another run on the board in the bottom of the second on her shot down the left field line on a 2-1 count to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead after two full.

UC Davis tied things up in the top of the fourth on a solo homer by Sarah Axelson and a blooper RBI single to shallow right center by Jessica Gonzalez.

But Oregon State regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of errors by UC Davis third baseman Marissa Araujo, with sophomore Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, Alberta) scoring, running for Hall, who led off the inning with a single to left center.

The Aggies tied things up in the top of the seventh to make it three all on a RBI single by Elizabeth Santana to put pressure back on the Beavers.

Cavestany led off the bottom half of the inning with a single through the left side before stealing second. A ground out put her on third with two outs bringing the hitless Chandler to the plate. Taking a ball, Chandler found the pitch she wanted on the next one seen to send one deep out of the park to give the victory to the Beavers.

Senior Kelly Dyer (Eugene, Ore.) started the game for the Beavers, throwing 4.1 innings, facing three in the top of the fifth and fanning three. Hall was the pitcher of record, improving to 4-10, on 2.2 innings of work, with two strikeouts and scattering two hits.

The Aggies’ Alex Holmes was charged with the loss after pitching 5.2 innings, giving up the game winning unearned run.

Oregon State will face Pacific at 11:15 a.m. and Loyola Marymount at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday for day two of the CSUF DiMarini Invitational. Follow these games live through GameTracker or on Twitter – OregonStateSB.
