Wildcats Pounce Broncos 6-1

TUCSON, Ariz.—The University of Arizona men’s tennis team bounced back from two tough losses last weekend to defeat the Santa Clara Broncos 6-1 today at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center.
The No. 35 ranked Wildcats won the doubles point for the third match in a row and won five of their six singles matches to pick up their seventh win of the season. The Wildcats are 7-2 this season in doubles competition.
In doubles competition on court one, Arizona's Pat Metham and Borja Malo battled Broncos’ Kyle Dandan and Nicolas Vinel until the Wildcat duo went up 6-5 and took the next two consecutive points to win 8-5.
The Wildcats clinched the doubles point on court three after Andres Carrasco and Andres Arango won a close match against Santa Clara’s Andrew Kells and Grant Fleming. The Wildcats took the early lead and never looked back and topped the Bronco’s duo 8-6.
In the third doubles match, Arizona’s No. 51 ranked duo of Geoff Embry and Ravid Hazi fell in a tough 8-7 (6) tiebreaker to Santa Clara’s Brian Brogan and Jay Wong. Embry and Hazi have played in three consecutive doubles tiebreakers this season and have won two out of the three.
After the team fell in some tough singles matches last weekend in Texas, the Wildcats came out strong today clinching five singles matches against the Broncos.
Sophomore Jason Zafiros rebounded after two consecutive losses by downing Kells 6-3, 6-2 on court three to help the Wildcats go up 2-0.
Andres Arango took care of business on court two against Brogan claiming the victory 6-1, 6-2. In the first set, Arango fell behind 0-1 but Arango scored the next six points. In the second set the senior from Ecuador went up 3-2 and never fell behind and scored the next three consecutive points for the Wildcats third point of the day.
In the No. 5 position, Embry fell behind early and was defeated by Bronco’s Nicolas Vinel 6-4, 6-3. Vinel scored the Bronco’s only point of the day.
On court one junior Jay Goldman clinched the win for the Wildcats by topping Dandan in two sets. The junior from Worcester, Mass. won a close first set 7-5, and then took it to Dandan in the second, defeating the sophomore 6-1 to clinch the win and the victory for the Wildcats.
Andres Carrasco swept Wong in the first set 6-0 on court four. The junior also took an early lead in the second set to go up 3-0, before Kells answered. Carrasco powered back and defeated Wong 6-2 for the Wildcats fifth point.
Senior Ravid Hazi finished strong for Arizona in his return to singles play topping Tom Pham 6-4, 6-3.
The Wildcats host Nebraska on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
