Arizona's Del Ponte Named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week; California's Arioto Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA freshman third baseman Brigette Del Ponte was named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week and CALIFORNIA junior pitcher Valerie Arioto was named Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for March 1-7, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Del Ponte, a native of Peoria, Ariz., hit a home run in four consecutive games, knocked in 13 RBI on seven hits over the weekend to help lead the Wildcats to an undefeated 4-0 weekend. In a doubleheader sweep of New Mexico last week, Del Ponte turned in two back-to-back three RBI performances. In a 13-5 run-rule victory over St. John’s, Del Ponte hit a grand slam and and an RBI-single to earn her fifth RBI of the game. She now leads the Wildcats in batting average (.514), RBI (26) and is tied for the lead in home runs (6).
Arioto pitched two complete game wins over the weekend, tallying 23 strikeouts and allowing only 4 hits. The Pleasanton, Calif. native led Cal to a 6-0 win over New Mexico State, allowing just one hit, three walks, while striking out half (13) of the batters she faced (26). In a 7-0 victory over Portland State, Arioto allowed just three hits in seven innings of work, allowing just a .115 opponent batting average.
This is Del Ponte’s first weekly honor and the 126th all-time for Arizona. For Arioto this is also her first Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor and the 62nd all-time for the Bears.
