Bruing Bloodline Blog: UCLA Ready For NCAA Indoor Championships
March 9, 2010
The Bruins are heading back to Fayetteville, AR to conclude what has been a successful indoor campaign. Having already won a second consecutive MPSF team title, top Bruin athletes will compete at the NCAA Championships at the University of Arkansas on Friday and Saturday. Those qualified include the #3 ranked DMR (Scott Crawford, Quentin Powell, Cory Primm, and Marlon Paterson), #9 ranked 60m hurdler Kevin Craddock and the #15 pole vaulter Casey DiCesare.
This past weekend the mens team competed at three different venues in order to solidify and improve qualifying performances. In Seattle, Casey DiCesare improved his personal best in the pole vault to 17-7.75. While at Iowa State, Kevin Craddock lowered his 60m hurdle season-best to 7.75. The middle distance group headed back to Notre Dame to protect their DMR qualifying position, and in hopes of improving qualifying performances. The DMR was not required to run on Friday evening, as none of the teams in heat #1 beat the Bruins season-best time of 9:31.07. This assured that the DMR would be in the NCAA Indoor Championship. The secured position allowed DMR team members to give their best on the following day in their open events.
On Saturday afternoon Marlon Patterson just missed becoming the first UCLA miler ever to break four minutes indoors while recording a lifetime-best 4:00.33. Cory Primm ran an indoor personal best of 1:48.07, just off of the automatic qualifying time of 1:48.00.
Primm's time ranked him as the #12 800m runner in the NCAA, and within the qualifying field. The coaching staff would have liked to be able to offer Cory the opportunity to run the open 800m, however, due to the physical demand and overlap of the prelims of the 800m and the final in the DMR it wasn't possible. In the final analysis the coaching staff, we felt that the best decision for the team was that each of the legs of the DMR run fresh on Friday night. Keep a close eye on the foursome on Friday night, as the Bruin DMR hopes to improve upon their #3 ranking during the championships.
Also, please make note that due to the travel itinerary for the NCAA Championships, there will be no March track and field social. We will resume our monthly gathering April 14th at a location to be announced.
