Divers Headed to Zone Championships
March 9, 2010
STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford divers Meg Hostage, Carmen Stellar and Brent Eichenseer will head to the Zone E Diving Championships in Austin, TX for three days starting on Thursday, looking to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
“It is definitely a tough fight for all three,” said diving coach Rick Schavone, who in 32 years at Stanford has had divers win eight national titles and be named All-American 87 times. “There are too few spots for the women and too many good divers for the men. Meg is really solid on the one and three-meter, Carmen's skills are best in the three and platform, and Brent is best on the three-meter. All will have to dive real well to qualify.”
All three will compete in the one-meter, three-meter and platform competitions at the regional championship featuring collegiate divers from the West Coast, Hawai'i, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. Upwards of 45 divers are in the one-meter event, 20-30 divers in the three-meter and platform. All will vie for seven spots on the men's side and six on the women, ranked on their finish in each event.
All three last competed two weeks ago at the Pac-10 Diving Championships in Federal Way, WA. Hostage, a junior, was fourth in the one-meter (292.30) and fifth in the three-meter (331.95); Stellar, a senior, was fourth in the three-meter (338.65) and in the platform (258.35) and seventh in the one-meter (264.40); and Eichenseer, a junior, was third in the three-meter (382.00) and platform (391.85) and fourth in the one-meter (386.85). Each diver helped their team win the 2010 team title.
On the season, Eichenseer has won five events, and finished second another four times. Since fellow All-American Dwight Dumais injured his shoulder in late January, finishing his collegiate career, Eichenseer posted career-bests in the one-meter and platforms, and had a season-best at the Pac-10s.
In two years at Zones, Eichenseer has twice finished third in the platform, finished fifth twice in the three-meter and once in the one-meter (2008). He was an All-American in the platform in 2009.
Hostage has won nine events this season, Stellar has won three times and finished second another seven times. Hostage was the Pac-10's Diver of the Month for January. Stellar set career-highs in both the one and three-meters this season. Stellar's season has also included a quarterfinal appearance in both the platform and three-meters at the U.S. Winter Nationals.
Hostage had a spectacular freshman year two years ago, winning the Pac-10 title in the three-meter and then winning the one-meter and platform competition at Zones. She was an All-American in both events. She was also a runner-up in the three-meter. Last year she was fourth in the one-meter and fifth in the three-meter, before not getting out of the preliminaries in each NCAA event.
Stellar, closing out her All-American career after walking onto the team, was second last year in the platform, third in the one-meter and fourth in the three-meter at Zones, earning All-America honors in the platform. In her first season, she had a best of ninth in the three-meter at Zones. She finished 14th at the NCAAs in the platform in 2009.
The women's NCAA Championships will take place in West Lafayette, IN starting on March 18, while the men's championships will take place in Columbus, OH starting on March 26.
