No. 12 California Wins the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational

March 9, 2010

SAN JOSE, CALIF. -

The No. 12 California Golden Bears women's gymnastics team won the team title at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational in San Jose. Sophomore Joanne Lee was the top Cal individual with a fourth-place finish.

The Bears played 36 holes through extreme weather conditions on Monday, having to contend with winds, rain and even hail in the opening two rounds. The ended the long day in third place, trailing San Jose State by seven strokes.

Tuesday's final round of 18 holes was a completely different story. Though there were still occasional gusty wins and a chilly start to the round, the rains stayed away and the final round of play went off under sunny skies.

The Bears dropped four strokes off of their team totals in the first two rounds, posting a 297 and a team total of 899 for the tournament. San Jose State dropped to third place with a third round 308 and a 903 total for the tournament. UC Davis, who had led through most of the final round, finished second at 901, shooting a 300 in the final round.

Sophomore Joanne Lee was the top finisher for Cal. Lee posted an even-par 72 in the final round, giving her a +5 (221) for the tournament. She had three birdies, putting her at two-under going down the stretch, but a pair of late bogeys put her back at even par. Daniela Holmqvist had a solid final round, shooting a one-over 73 to finish in a tie for seventh overall at eight over. Holmqvist started the day with a birdie on the par-four third hole and also birdied the par-4 16th. Emily Childs played even on her final six holes to bring in a five-over for the day and +10 for the tournament. She tied for 11th among individuals. Pia Halbig had three birdies, including a key four on the par-5 18 to help Cal secure the victory.

Christi Corpus of San Jose State was the individual medalist, finishing at two-over par.

This is the second team tournament victory of the season for the Bears. They also were the champions at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in the fall. Cal won this same tournament in 2008, the last time it was held (it was rained out in 2009). This is the 22nd team victory in program history.

Cal will take a break from tournament competition with their next scheduled tournament a month away, the PING ASU Invitational, April 9-11 in Tempe, Arizona.
