No. 9 Baylor Beats No. 13 USC Women
March 9, 2010
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 13 USC women's tennis team squared off against another top-10 team at Marks Stadium today, playing No. 9 Baylor in an uncommonly windy day in Los Angeles. The blustery day would give way to a Baylor win, with the Bears claiming a 5-2 victory over the host Women of Troy. Baylor grabbed the doubles point and then won three straight singles matches to secure the win. USC goes to 8-5 overall with the loss, while Baylor improves to 10-2.
At the No. 1 doubles match, USC's #40 Pulido/Sanchez was in stride with Baylor's #11 Borsanyi/Broosova before the Bears were able to get a step ahead and claim an 8-6 win. Not too long afterward, however, Lao/Ramos were pulling out of reach of Filipiak/Ormond on court two, and the Trojans evened things with an 8-5 win while things stayed tightly wound at No. 3. With things locked up 7-7, Baylor made a late push to go up 8-7 and then clinched its match and the doubles point for the Bears with a 9-7 win.
Baylor's Karolina Filipiak got the Bears up 2-0 with a win over Lyndsay Kinstler at the No. 6 singles position to start things off. On court three, USC's #22 freshman Danielle Lao's comeback efforts were staved off by Baylor's #98 Taylor Ormond, who claimed a 6-2, 7-5 win to make it a 3-0 Baylor lead. And moments later, the Bears had the win in hand after #53 Csilla Borsanyi beat USC's #91 freshman Valeria Pulido 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 slot.
With the win already in Baylor's column, #82 Jelena Stanivuk retired from her match against USC senior Sarah Fansler, giving the Trojans their first point of the match. That left three-setters going strong at the No. 1 and No. 2 courts. USC's #21 Alison Ramos rallied hard from a first-set loss and forced a third set with a tiebreak. Ramos would get ahead 3-0 in the third before Baylor's #41 Nina Secerbegovic pulled back ahead and stole the win 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3. The match of the day was always expected to be on court one, as USC's #3 Maria Sanchez had a rematch with Baylor's #8 Lenka Broosova. The pair had clashed during USC and Baylor's last dual match during the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc., last month. Broosova had gotten the win there, but Sanchez would have the last word in today's face-off. In an all-out battle amidst wild winds, Sanchez recovered from a second-set slip and a late third-set break to win the match in a third-set tiebreaker, tacking up a ferocious 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (5) win over Broosova in the battle of top-10 singles stars.
USC will now head to Arizona State for a 12 p.m. match against the Sun Devils on Saturday (March 13).
