March 11, 2010
The No. 15 USC men's golf team (as ranked by Golfweek.com), led by two-time All-American Matt Giles and an up-and-coming group of underclassmen, continues the spring slate at the 2010 Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters at the Southern Highlands G.C. in Las Vegas, Friday through Sunday (March 12-14).
The 14-team field includes Arizona, Arizona State, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA, host UNLV and USC.
Play will begin each day at 8 a.m. with tee times off the No. 1 and No. 10 holes. The course plays to a par 72 at 7,510 yards.
Live results of the event will be available at Golfstat.com.
USC, which lost three All-Americans from last season (Jamie Lovemark, Tim Sluiter and Tom Glissmeyer), competed in four team events in the fall season, finishing as high as a tie for fourth at The Prestige at PGA West. USC also tied for sixth at the Gifford Collegiate at CordeValle. Troy opened the spring semester with a ninth-place finish at the Mauna Lani Invitational and a tie for fourth at its own USC Collegiate Invitational.
The Trojans, featuring two-time All-American Giles, have received contributions from everyone on the roster this year.
Sophomore Steve Lim boasts USC's top stroke average (72.89) and its second highest individual finish this year, a tie for third at The Prestige at 4-under 212 (72-71-69). He also tied for 13th at the Gifford Collegiate (4-under 212, 70-69-73) and at the USC Collegiate (2-under 211, 69-73-69).
Junior Daniel Park entered the spring with the squad's low stroke average and is currently second (73.42), thanks in part to a tie for 13th at The Prestige, where he registered a 2-over 218 (74-71-73). He also tied for 28th at the Gifford Collegiate at par 216 (70-75-71).
Martin Trainer leads USC's group of four freshmen with four top 21 finishes and a stroke average of 73.28, third best on the team. He tied for 12th at the Ping-Golfweek Preview, tied for 18th at The Prestige at 3-over 219 (74-71-74), tied for 19th at the Olympia Fields-Fighting Illini Invitational and tied for 21st at the Mauna Lani Invitational.
Freshman T.J. Vogel, in five starts, has three top 30 finishes, including a second-place at the USC Collegiate, where he finished 9-under 204 (70-63-71). His second round score was two off the tournament record and USC's lowest of the season.
Giles tied for 10th to lead USC at the season-opening Olympia Fields, but has not cracked the top 10 since. Ranked among the nation's top golfers as a sophomore, Giles looks to get untracked this spring.
Junior Bo DeHuff has seen action in five events, highlighted by a tie for 26th at the Bill Cullum Invitational, where he led USC finishers.
Freshman Stewart Hagestad has seen action in four events and has one top 30 finish, though at the USC Collegiate, he finished with back-to-back 69s to tie for 43rd. Freshman Sam Smith, in six outings, has one top 30 finish.
