Heiken Places 14th on 3m Board at NCAA Zone E Diving
March 12, 2010
AUSTIN, Texas - California freshman Kelsey Heiken placed 14th in the three-meter springboard final on the second day of NCAA Zone E Qualifying Meet on Friday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center. Heiken produced a score of 534.55 in the final, which was won by USC's Victoria Ishimatsu (657.45).
Golden Bears sophomore Molly Hayes finished 25th in the three-meter preliminary round with a score of 243.40 but did not reach the final. Heiken compiled a score of 270.60 to place 12th in the prelim.
'Kelsey really settled down,' Cal diving coach Ben Herdt said. 'I think she was nervous on one meter yesterday. At the same time, three meters is a more challenging discipline. She used all the skills she learned throughout the year and put together a consistent set of dives in prelims and finals. It was a great experience for her as a freshman to be here and to have done what she did.
'Molly didn't go top 18, but she was 21st on one meter and 25th today. With a contest of 46 or 48 divers, she proved she belonged here. I'm really happy with both Molly and Kelsey, who represented Cal diving in a great way. They proved we're getting on the scene.'
This marks the end of the Cal diving season, as neither Heiken nor Hayes will compete in Saturday's platform competition.
