Golden Bears Fall in 5-2 Upset to Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The 11th-ranked California men's tennis team (8-4) dropped a 5-2 match at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on Friday (March 12) to No. 28 Texas A&M (8-4). The Golden Bears claimed their two points with wins at the first and sixth singles courts but were unable to overcome the Aggies as they suffered their second consecutive defeat.

Texas A&M established its rhythm early by claiming the doubles point with a sweep of all three courts. At the top court, the No. 9-ranked team of Jeff Dadamo and Austin Krajicek came away with an 8-2 win over Cal's No. 30-ranked duo of juniors Jonathan Dahan and Pedro Zerbini. The Aggies sealed the first point of the day as Alberto Bautista and Alexey Grigorov took an 8-5 win against junior Bozhidar Katsarov and freshman Riki McLachlan at court two. Texas A&M also registered an 8-5 score for the win on court three as Alexis Kiegou and Marcus Lunt defeated sophomores Nick Andrews and Sky Lovill.

Into singles matches, the Aggies struck first to claim a 2-0 lead, with a win on court three. There, Kiegou defeated No. 73 Dahan, 6-4, 6-4. No. 4 singles came off the court next as Grigorov finished a three-set victory over Andrews, 6-3, 0-6, 6-1, to set Texas A&M up with a 3-0 advantage. The Bears got on the board with a win at the top court next as No. 42 Zerbini upset No. 16 Krajicek, 6-4, 6-4. However, the Aggies clinched the victory when Bautista came up with a 7-5, 6-0 win at the fifth court over Katsarov.

A&M got its fifth point in a 6-1, 6-1 win at court two with No. 33 Dadamo taking out freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt, but Cal took the final point of the match as McLachlan defeated Colin Hoover at the sixth court, 6-3, 7-6 with a 7-4 score in the tiebreaker.

The Bears remain in the Lone Star State and head to Houston for an 11 a.m. CT (9 a.m. PT) match against No. 51 Rice (6-7, 0-0 Conference USA) at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. Please visit and click to the men's tennis page for live statistics and results.
