March 13, 2010

SAN DIEGO – The No. 34 University of Arizona men’s tennis team clinched their second road match of the season by defeating the No. 45 University of San Diego Toreros 5-1 at the University of San Diego West Tennis courts.

“It was a good match for the guys today,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz.  “It was a nice way to start out our spring break road trip.”

In doubles action, the Wildcats picked up their eighth doubles point of the season.  The Wildcat's duo of Borja Malo and Pat Metham defeated Dean Jackson and Nils Schive 4-1 after the Toreros were forced to retire due to injury.

The Toreros tied the doubles point on court two, with Nikola Bubnic and Charl Wolmarans topping the No. 51 ranked pair of Geoff Embry and Ravid Hazi 8-3.  It was all Wildcats though on court three, with junior Andres Carrasco and senior Andres Arango teaming up to defeat Abdullah Hashem and Thibaut Visy 8-5 to clinch the doubles point.

In singles action, senior Ravid Hazi defeated San Diego’s Casey Powers 6-2, 6-1 to give the Wildcats their second point of the day.  Arango then topped Visy 6-3, 6-2 for the 3-0 Wildcat lead.  San Diego earned their first and only point of the day on court one.  No. 89 Bubnic defeated Jay Goldman in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Malo returned to the singles lineup and clinched the match for the Wildcats.  The junior from Santiago, Chile took Hashem down to the wire.  He won the first set 6-3 and then won a close 7-6 (12-10) tiebreaker.

On court three, Toreros’ Wolmarans won the first set 6-2, but Carrasco fought back in the second winning 6-1.  The third set was not finished and the Wildcats had already clinched the win on court five.

On the sixth and final court, sophomore Jason Zafiros rebounded after losing his singles match against Nebraska last weekend.  The Bradenton, Fla. native won in three close sets including a third set tiebreaker.  Zafiros won 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) to give the Wildcats their fifth point.

With the win the No. 34 Wildcats improve to 8-4.  No. 45 San Diego drops to 7-4.

Arizona is back in action on Monday at 3:00 p.m. MST.  The Wildcats face San Diego State in San Diego.
