McCormick and Eggers Dominate Tower at Zone E Championships
March 13, 2010
Elina Eggers and Riley McCormick dominated the 10-meter platform to conclude the Arizona State diving team's successful weekend at the NCAA Zone E Championships. The Sun Devils qualified three divers, which ties the most 13th year head coach Mark Bradshaw has qualified in one year. Eggers will head to the women's NCAA Championships, which begin on Thursday in Lafayette, Ind. McCormick and Constantin Blaha will head to Columbus, Ohio for the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships the following week.
'They dove great,' said 13th year head coach Mark Bradshaw. 'Both Elina and Riley absolutely dominated.'
The tower duo of Eggers and McCormick proved why they are both two of the world's top platform divers. McCormick absolutely dominated. The freshman, who is currently ranked eighth in the world on the event, scored an incredible 905.4 points to just dominate. He won by almost 170 points to claim first over teammate Blaha.
Not to be outdone, Eggers won the women's tower by nearly 70 points over Stanford's Meg Hostage. A 2008 Olympic finalist in the event, Eggers tallied 612,3 points to earn her first Zone victory.
Sophomore Blaha, who never trained platform until he came to ASU last winter, finished runner-up. The Austrian Olympian tallied 737.75 points to finish second over USC's Steven Starks.
'For Constantin, who is not even a platform diver, to place second, it's incredible,' said Bradshaw. 'It was a good successful meet.'
Sophomore Cameron Bradshaw and junior Brittany Jumer just missed joining Blaha, Eggers and McCormick as NCAA qualifiers. The NCAA Championships takes seven from Zone E for the men and six for the women. Bradshaw was the last one out, placing eighth. Jumer also placed eighth overall.
'We knew we had to have the cards fall right for Cam to get in,' said the elder Bradshaw. 'It was close.'
The NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships will be held March 18-20 while the men's championships will take place March 25-27.
