Rowers Dominate Aztecs

March 13, 2010

The UCLA women's crew won all four races Saturday against San Diego State and will enter the San Diego Crew Classic in two weeks unbeaten.

A week ago, the Bruins swept crews from Loyola Marymount. Saturday morning, the Bruins swept the Novice Eight, Varsity Four and a pair of Varsity Eight races at Ballona Creek in Marina del Rey. All distances were 2000 meters.

Facing a two-knot headwind in the 9 a.m. Novice Eight race, UCLA's 'A' and 'B' boats surged ahead when an SDSU rower 'caught a crab,' turning the boat sideways, and effectively eliminating the Aztecs from contention. The SDSU crew managed to finish seven seconds out of second place.

An inexperienced UCLA crew in the Varsity Four race proved no match for SDSU as the Bruins' 'A' boat won by 41.44 seconds, its largest time differential of the day. The Bruins' 'B' crew was just over 15 seconds behind.

The second Varsity Eight race had a close start until the Bruins built a steady lead. They had increased it to more than a boat length when the crews passed the boathouse at 1,250 meters, and finally won the race by nearly 28 seconds.

The Varsity Eight race was much the same under slightly more difficult conditions. By now, the headwind had increased to 12 knots. Still, the Bruins built a solid seven-seat lead at 500 meters and never looked back. They were ahead by three lengths at 1,250 meters and won by more than 25 seconds.

Head Coach Amy Fuller-Kearney was pleased, but cautious. 'I was happy that our `B' boat in the Novice Eight race was able to hold off a feisty challenge from San Diego State. All of our boats raced well today. But we'll see exactly how good we are in two weeks at the San Diego Crew Classic.'
