Stanford's Appel Named Toyo Tires Pac-10 Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year
March 13, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Standord senior center Jayne Appel was named the 2010 Toyo Tires Pac-10 Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. The award, which is presented in the 22 sports the Conference sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.
Playing her final season at Stanford, Jayne Appel (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) is a psychology major with a 3.18 grade point average. While most known for her athletic abilities on the court as one of the top players in the country, she has also maintained excellence in the classroom, earning Academic All-Pac-10 honors twice. Appel has helped the Cardinal capture the Conference regular-season title all four years of her career, the league tournament crown three-straight years and make two trips to the NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four.
Appel broke the Pac-10's all-time rebounding record, which was held by former USC great Lisa Leslie (1991-94) and ranks in the top-15 among the league's all-time scorers. She was a WBCA, Associated Press and United States Basketball Writer's Association (USBWA) All-American last year, and is a candidate for the State Farm Wade Trophy, Wooden Award and Naismith Award nominees, honors which are presented to the nation's top-collegiate player. Appel is averaging 14.0 ppg and 9.6 rpg, which ranks second in the Pac-10. Appel has had 13 double-doubles this season while leading the Cardinal clinch the top seed in the State Farm Pac-10 Tournament for the ninth-consecutive year, going 18-0 in Conference play.
Eligible student-athletes include seniors on track to receive a degree with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher who have been at their institution for more than a year and participate in at least 50% of the scheduled contests in their particular sport.
Scholar-Athletes of the Year in each sport will receive a commemorative award. Toyo® will donate $1,000 to the scholarship funds of the institution's athletic department of each winner in recognition of their accomplishments.
The Pac-10 Conference, in cooperation with Pac-10 corporate partner Toyo Tires, established the 'Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards, presented by Toyo Tires' during the 2009-10 academic year.
