USC Hammers Hawai'i In 12-2 Victory
March 14, 2010
HONOLULU - Sophomore first baseman Ricky Oropesa (Rancho Cucamonga/Etiwanda HS) went 5-for-5 with two RBI Sunday as the USC Trojans blasted the Hawai'i Rainbows, 12-2, in the third game of a four-game series. The Trojans posted season-highs with 12 runs and 17 hits.
Oropesa became the first Trojan with five hits since Mike O'Neill had five hits against UC Riverside in May of 2009, hitting three singles and two doubles in the game.
Matt Foat was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, home run and three RBI while Kevin Roundtree went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. USC pounded out six doubles, a triple and two home runs on the afternoon.
Kevin Couture (2-0) picked up the win with five innings, allowing two runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts as USC (8-7) won its second straight game for the first time this season. The Trojans knocked out UH starter Matt Sisto in the third after he gave up four runs on six hits as the Rainbows dropped to 7-8 overall.
Joe De Pinto started the scoring in the third with a triple off the wall in center, scoring on Alex Glenn's sacrifice fly. Oropesa singled to right and scored when Foat hit a double to left center. Kevin Macdonald and Kolten Wong hit solo home runs for the Rainbows, but Roundtree's solo homer in the right made it a 5-2 lead in the fifth. USC completed the scoring with four runs in the eighth on Oropesa's two-run double and Foat's two-run homer to center, all with two outs.
Chris Mezger and Logan Odom finished with four scoreless combined innings in relief for the Trojans. Mezger entered the game in the sixth with runners at first and second and no outs, but retired three straight batters with two strikeouts to work out of the jam.
The series concludes tomorrow with a 6:35 p.m. start (Honolulu time) before heading back to the mainland on Tuesday. Tomorrow's game will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
