USC Pitches Way To 3-1 Win At Hawai'i
March 14, 2010
HONOLULU - Sophomore right-hander Ben Mount (Coto de Caza/Tesoro HS) threw the complete game Saturday as the USC Trojans defeated the Hawai'i Rainbows, 3-1, to even the four-game series. Mount allowed only one run on five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Sam Spangler was the hard-luck loser for Hawai'i (7-7) after giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with no walks and 11 strikeouts.
Matt Foat went 2-for-4 with one RBI for USC (7-8).
Garret Houts singled to left in the first, stealing second and scoring on Foat's RBI double to right for the 1-0 score. David Freitas and Collin Bennett hit back-to-back singles in the bottom of the fifth, but Mount induced a double play from Kevin Macdonald as the tying run scored.
In the USC seventh, Foat blasted a triple over the head of UH right fielder Christian Johnson and scored when Johnson stumbled while trying to grab the ball, subsequently being charged with an error. Cade Kreuter singled to center as Adam Landecker followed with a deep fly ball to center for a double. Kreuter was stopped at third, but shortstop Greg Garcia on the cutoff throw sailed the ball over Freitas' head at the plate, allowing Kreuter to score for the 3-1 lead to complete the scoring.
After Pi'ikea Kitamura recorded a leadoff single in the ninth, Mount struck out Sean Montplaisir and Garcia before Kolten Wong hit a grounder to second baseman Joe De Pinto that turned into the final out of the game.
The series continues tomorrow with a 1:05 p.m. start (Honolulu time) with the series finale on Monday at 6:35 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on usctrojans.com.
