March 15, 2010

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Arizona freshman baseball player Joey Rickard has been named the Pacific-10 Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Rickard, who has started all of UA’s 15 games in centerfield, helped lead the Wildcats to a pair of sweeps last week over Saint Joseph’s and Northern Colorado. The 6-foot-1 native of Las Vegas hit .579 for the week, scored six runs and collected nine RBI in five games. Additionally, Rickard reached base five times with a walk and was twice hit by a pitch, yielding a .692 on base percentage, to go with five stolen bases.

On the season, Rickard is hitting .410 and has a .493 on base percentage, which rank 10th and ninth in the respective categories amongst all Pac-10 players to date. He leads the Wildcats and all Pac-10 players in both RBI (20) and stolen bases (9, tied), and has scored 13 runs. He has hit three doubles, one triple and is second on the club with a pair of home runs.

Rickard has been a key part of an explosive Arizona offense in the early part of the season. The Wildcats are second in the Pac-10 with a .358 batting average and are second with 141 total runs scored. Arizona hitters have the second-most walks (71), the fewest strikeouts (69) and the second-most stolen bases (36) in the league.

Arizona will continue is season-opening 26-game homestand as it hosts Wichita State (March 16-17) and Sacramento State (March 19-21) this week. The series against the Shockers will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium.
