UCLA Seeded Eighth In NCAA Tournament, Will Face North Carolina State
March 15, 2010
The eighth-seeded UCLA women's basketball team will open NCAA Tournament play on Sunday, Mar. 21 in Minneapolis, MN against ninth-seeded North Carolina State. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 and ESPNU at 8:30 pm CT.
The Bruins (24-8) earned an at-large selection into the Tournament after a second-place finish in the Pac-10 regular season and a run to the Championship game of the Pac-10 Tournament. UCLA's loss to top-seeded Stanford in the Pac-10 championship game halted a 10-game winning streak. The Bruins will be making their 10th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since advancing to the second round in 2006. This will be the second time in the Bruins' last three Tournament appearances that they will play first/second round games in Minneapolis (also in 2004).
North Carolina State (20-13) also advanced to the championship game of its conference tournament, losing to top-seeded Duke, 70-60. The Wolfpack have won seven of their last nine games and will be making their 21st appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first since advancing to the Sweet Sixteen in 2007.
UCLA is coached by 2010 Pac-10 Coach of the Year Nikki Caldwell, who won two NCAA Championships as an assistant coach at Tennessee (2007, 2008) and one as a player (1991). North Carolina State is coached by Kellie (Jolly) Harper, who won three NCAA titles as a player at Tennessee (1996, 1997, 1998). Caldwell coached Harper as a grad assistant during Harper's senior season in 1999.
The winner of the UCLA/North Carolina State game will face the winner of the Nebraska/Northern Iowa game on Tuesday, Mar. 23.
