USC Women Net 6-1 Win Over Fresno State
March 17, 2010
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 21 USC women's tennis team powered to a much-needed win on Wednesday afternoon, topping visiting Fresno State 6-1 with a string of straight-set singles wins. The Women of Troy kicked out ahead with a smooth sweep of doubles play before rolling to a victory clinched by Danielle Lao. USC improves to 9-6 overall with the win.
The Women of Troy got a quick and decisive win from doubles duo Danielle Lao / Alison Ramos to start off the winning effort on the day. Lao/Ramos took down McQueen/Modoc 8-1 while their Trojan teammates were stuck in tighter battles on courts one and three. Those matches finished up mere seconds apart - both 8-6 decisions in USC's favor - as #56 Valeria Pulido / Maria Sanchez and Sarah Fansler / Lyndsay Kinstler pockets wins to get USC a 1-0 lead and move into singles play.
Sarah Fansler streaked out ahead of her Bulldog opponent on court five, winning the first set relatively quickly to set a tone for the match. The Bulldogs would pick up a point at the No. 6 singles slot as USC's Lyndsay Kinstler retired from her match against Julia Gragera-Cano in the second set, but the Trojans were firing closer to victory on the remaining courts. With first-set wins in Trojan hands down the line, four different Women of Troy were poised for victory as they each set up to receive with five games already won in their respective second sets. #3 Maria Sanchez broke through first, getting USC ahead 2-1 in the match with her 6-0, 6-1 win over Renata Kucerkova at the No. 1 position. Sarah Fansler, too, broke her Fresno State foe to win her match 6-1, 6-3 over Anna Mikhaylova on court five. With USC up 3-1, #32 Danielle Lao calmly pushed ahead of Biana Modoc at the No. 3 singles slot, winning 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the win for USC.
On court four, #82 Valeria Pulido served out her match to beat Melissa McQueen 6-1, 6-3, and #20 Alison Ramos would wrap things up from her No. 2 spot with one last break of Laura Pola to claim a 6-1, 6-3 victory that put the finishing touches on USC's 6-1 win.
The Women of Troy are off for the next week, with a pair of matches set for next weekend as USC hosts Washington at 1:30 p.m. on March 26 and then hosts Washington State at 12 p.m. on March 27 for some Pac-10 action at Marks Stadium.
