March 18, 2010
HONOLULU - The California softball team improved to 21-5 overall and 2-1 at this week's Chevron Spring Fling Tournament with a 5-0 win over Hawaii on Thursday evening. The Golden Bears scored once in the second, twice in the third and twice in the fifth en route to the shut out.
To begin the second inning, Frani Echavarria singled up the middle and moved across the diamond to third thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Vernae Sevilla. With only one out, Jolene Henderson grounded out to third, but it was productive for Echavarria came around to score Cal's first run.
In the top of the third, with the Bears holding a 1-0 lead, Shannon Thomas had a one-out single to right center to bring up Valerie Ariotio. Arioto took the first pitch of her at bat and sent it flying over the right-field wall to increase Cal's lead to 3-0.
Things started well for the Bears in the top of the fifth when Jamia Reid led off and reached on a fielding error at short. Reid, who leads the team in stolen bases, advanced to second thanks to a sacrifice ground out by Thomas and then stole third. Arioto was next up for Cal and drew a walk and then stole second to put runners in serious scoring position at second and third.
Ziegenhirt then singled through the left side and a fielding error in left allowed both Reid and Arioto to score. The RBI single was the final hit for the Bears of the game, but they held the key 5-0 lead.
Arioto allowed just four hits in seven innings of work. She also struck out a season high 17 batters, four Ks above her previous 2010 season high.
Cal returns to play on Friday with another game with Hawaii and Lipscomb, which lost to Cal today after beating the Bears, 1-0, on Wednesday.
