Covington Sparks Beavers Top 14 Finish in Day One of NCAA Championships
March 18, 2010
Omaha, Neb. – Eighth-seeded junior Colby Covington (Springfield, Ore.) finished day one of the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships with a perfect 2-0 mark to spark the Oregon State wrestling team to a 14th place finish on Thursday.
All six wrestlers will advance to day two of the championships with Covington being the only one left in the championship bracket. Oregon State has 15.5 team points heading into Friday.
“Covington had a big win today, and it’s good he’s still in the championship round,” head coach Jim Zalesky said. “We have five still alive, which is something we haven’t had since I’ve been at Oregon State. We have all six still in position to place, but it’s just going to get tougher from here.”
The Beavers finished the first session of the tournament in ninth place with 11.5 points, led by redshirt freshman Mike Mangrum’s (Auburn, Wash.) technical fall Colby Covington’s major decision. Oregon State had four remaining in the championship bracket.
Eighth-seeded Covington held Jim Resnick of Rider to only escape points in their 174 pound match, Covington leading 7-0 with riding time not a factor, set Resnick loose before earning another takedown, while adding enough time for an extra point on riding time to earn the Beavers’ second bonus point match of the round.
In similar fashion as he did at the Midlands Championships, Covington earned the 3-1 decision in overtime over No. 9 Luke Manuel of Purdue to advance to the quarterfinals. Both wrestlers earned their escape point in the second and third periods before Covington got a shot at Manuel’s ankle and was able to turn it for a takedown with 11 seconds to go in the period. Covington will face No. 1 Mack Lewnes of Cornell in Session III.
Redshirt sophomore Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) scored the first win for the Beavers on the day, earning the 9-6 decision over Eric Morrill of Edinboro. Lara started off the match trailing 4-1 going into the second period. He tied things up on an escape and takedown, but Morrill started the third period with a 5-4 lead after an escape. Escaping again to start the third, Morrill also held 1:28 of riding time, but a late takedown, followed by a three-point near fall as time expired advanced Lara to face No. 3 Matt McDonough of Iowa in the first round.
McDonough defeated Lara, 15-0, in 6:31, but Lara rebounded with a major decision win over Andre Gonzalez of Cal State Fullerton in the first round of the consolation bracket. Lara scored early with five points on a takedown and near fall. He will take on Ross Gitomer of Virginia on Friday.
Sophomore Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) quickly followed with a win at 133 pounds. He tallied a quick takedown and led 7-2 after the second period, allowing Jimmy Kirchner or Rider only escape points. Kirchner improved to 7-3 on an escape to start the third period before earning a takedown on Kubec. But holding on with over two minutes of riding time, Kubec earned the 8-5 decision.
Kubec battled but lost a 4-0 decision to No. 2 Daniel Dennis of Iowa in the second round. He will face Kendric Maple on Friday. Maple and Kubec have already faced off this season with Kubec taking a 5-3 decision in overtime.
Earning the first bonus point win for the Beavers, Mangrum dominated Mike Koehnlein of Nebraska for a 17-2 technical fall. Mangrum scored early and quickly building a 16-2 lead to add the one-point for riding time, after accumulating 2:50.
Mangrum nearly advanced to the quarterfinals, holding No. 4 Reece Humphrey of Ohio State with a slim 1-0 lead late in the third period with riding time on his side. Humphrey escaped within 20 seconds left and earned the takedown to knock Mangrum into the consolation bracket in a heartbreaking 4-3 decision. Mangrum will take on Cole Schmitt of Wisconsin on Friday. Schmitt won their first meeting 10-3 in Corvallis to open the season.
Senior Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) took a come from behind win over Kyle John of Maryland at 157 pounds. After a scoreless first period, John took a 3-1 lead going into the third. Davis battled back to take the 7-5 lead, holding on as time expired.
Davis struggled early against No. 2 Adam Hall of Boise State with Hall quickly able to tally points and holding Davis to only escape points. Hall recorded a late takedown to boost the win to a major decision. Davis will take on Jarrett Hostetter of Millersville in the second round of the consolation bracket.
Sophomore Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) scored first on a shot for the takedown against No. 5 Daniel Erekson of Iowa but was unable to come back after Erekson widened the gap late in the first period and scored the only points in the second to win 11-6.
After a scoreless first period, Ricky Alcala of UC Davis earned the first point of the match on an escape, but Jack quickly answered with a takedown that held until the match ended to take the 2-1 decision. Jack will face Christopher Birchler of Edinboro on Friday first.
Competition continues on Friday beginning at 7:30 a.m. PT at Qwest Center. Session IV will begin at 4:00 p.m. PT. Continue to follow the Oregon State wrestling team on the Beaver NCAA Championships Central Page by clicking here.
