Four Huskies Selected For U23 National Team Camp
March 18, 2010
SEATTLE - As the women's rowing program continues to grow and flourish under Coach Bob Ernst, the number of athletes who earn national team consideration increases.
Senior Jennifer Park, junior Kerry Simmonds and sophomore coxswain Ariana Tanimoto were all tapped by USRowing this week to attend the U23 National Team Camp, a grueling selection process that identifies the brightest stars of the sport. This camp, which will train over the summer in Princeton and San Diego, is a tryout for the Women's 8+ and 4x boats that will compete at the FISA U23 World Championships in Belarus on June 22-25.
Senior Adrienne Martelli was a selection to the Elite Camp. Martelli rowed last year with the U23's, winning a silver medal at the World's in Racice, Czech Republic.Ernst felt his rowers' selection to the training camp validates the progress the program has made in recent years.
'The kids here (at UW) are bonafide athletes working hard year-round,' Ernst said. 'To get invited to these camps, the goal now is to be successful when you get there.'
Rowers begin training on June 1st, where trials in pair boats will help determine the fastest athletes. Then the camp moves on to New Jersey, where the rowers will continue competing for spots before the July 9 selection date.
In the coming weeks the Huskies should also learn about the nomination of their international rowers to their respective countries' national team camps.
'We like those kinds of things to be the standard for our program,' Ernst said. 'We celebrate these announcements and the expectation is they'll be successful when they get there. USRowing trains the kids to be world-class athletes.'
