Wildcats Sweep on Day 1

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 33 ranked University of Arizona men’s tennis team swept the No. 69 College of William & Mary on day one of the Blue/Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala. 4-0 to advance to the second round of action.  The Wildcats will face No. 39 Tulsa tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. CST in the quarterfinals.  Earlier today, Tulsa defeated Furman 4-0.

 

“The guys played well today,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz.  “It was a good overall team effort.”

 

The Wildcats started the day by picking up the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.  On court one, the No. 55 ranked duo of Pat Metham and Borja Malo topped Jamie Whiteford and Sebastien Vidal 8-4 and on court three, Andres Carrasco and Andres Arango downed Daniel Mihalvo and Ilja Orre 8-2 to secure the doubles point for the Cats.  On court two, Keniel Juneau and Anton Anderson topped Ravid Hazi and Geoff Embry 8-2.

 

In singles, Arizona took care of business by clinching three of them to secure the victory.  On court six, Hazi took it to Orre 6-1, 6-3 and on court three Jason Zafiros won a close battle with Whiteford.  Zafiros fell in the first set 2-6, but bounced back topping Whiteford 6-2 in the second, and then blanked him in the third 6-0.  With the Wildcats up 2-0, Malo ended play by clinching the win for the Wildcats on court five.  The junior from Santiago, Chile downed Anderson in the first set 6-1, dropped his second set 2-6, but then recovered in the third by defeating the Tribe 6-2 to help the Wildcats top the Tribe 4-0 in the first round of the Blue/Gray Classic.

 

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 10-4, while the Tribe drops to 12-9.

 

Tomorrow’s action will have the Wildcats squaring off against the No. 39 ranked University of Tulsa Hurricane (10-4) in the quarterfinals.  The winner of that match will play the winner of the Virginia CommonWealth/Oklahoma match on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the semifinals.

 

This will be the third meeting between Arizona and Tulsa with the Wildcats holding a 2-0 advantage over the Hurricane.  The last meeting between the two schools took place

 on January 29, 2005.  The Wildcats were ranked No. 26 at the time and topped the then No. 60 Hurricane 7-1 in Tulsa, Okla.  Tulsa has three players ranked in the ITA singles rankings.  Ashley Watling at No. 45, Marcelo Arevalo at No. 88 and Philip Stephens at No. 114.  The Hurricane also has a doubles team ranking in the ITA doubles rankings.  Stephens and Watling are ranked at No. 40.
