Cal Practices in Full Pads for First Time this Spring

March 19, 2010

BERKELEY - Cal conducted its first practice of the spring in full pads Thursday as action heated up with hard hits and spirited play during a workout on a gorgeous warm afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

'We had some good hits out there today,' said head coach Jeff Tedford when speaking to media members after the workout. 'We cut them loose a little bit and guys were flying around.'

The practice included a couple of extended full team sessions with two long scoring drives highlighting the latter.

TB Covaughn DeBoskie-Johnson scored on a five-yard run to cap the first drive of the final session. The Bears ran another play from the 10-yard line after that with QB Kevin Riley running the ball into the end zone. TB Dasarte Yarnway finished off the second drive with a one-yard run of his own.

Riley and fellow signal callers Beau Sweeney and Brock Mansion each saw action during the final period.

'They all got time and we'll evaluate the tape, but we mostly ran the ball today,' said Tedford. 'We didn't throw the ball much. It was meant to be a physical day to see what was going on up front, and we had a couple of sustained drives on offense.'

The Golden Bears will be out of action during spring break before returning for the fifth of 15 spring practices on Tuesday, Mar. 30.

Cal will open its final season with the current configuration of Memorial Stadium in 2010 on Saturday, Sept. 4 vs. UC Davis. Arizona State, Colorado, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and Washington will also visit Memorial Stadium this season to complete the Bears' seven-game home schedule.
