March 19, 2010
STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Teagan Gerhart turned in her first career perfect game as the Stanford softball team defeated Santa Clara, 8-0, in six innings, Friday, in the Louisville Slugger Classic at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal registered 11 hits as it improved to 16-3 on the season, while the Broncos dropped to 5-11.
Gerhart dominated the Broncos and pushed her season record to 10-2 after retiring a season-high 13 batters. Of her 69 pitches, 54 registered as strikes. The rookie now has 88 strikeouts and holds a 1.71 ERA.
Offensively, senior Shannon Koplitz led the way going 2-3 with four RBI, including a triple and a home run. Senior Alissa Haber recorded two doubles, while freshman Jenna Rich pitched in with two hits for Stanford.
The Cardinal quickly got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Haber led off with a double to right center field. She advanced to third as Hansen flew out to the short stop in foul territory. First baseman Melisa Koutz drew a walk, bringing sophomore Maya Burns to the plate. Burns ripped a double to right centerfield, scoring both Haber and Koutz for the early 2-0 Stanford advantage.
The Cardinal continued to put runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, center fielder Sarah Hassman singled to left field and then stole second base to move into scoring position. Back at the top of the order, Haber recorded her second double of the game to bring Hassman home. The rally continued as Hansen hit a double of her own to score Haber. Up next, Rich hit an infield single that moved Hansen to third. Koplitz did the rest, tallying her second triple of the season. Both runner scored and the Cardinal took a 6-0 lead after two innings.
Santa Clara held off Stanford in the next three innings, but the Cardinal's offense proved to be too much in the bottom of the sixth. Rich doubled to right center field and then Koplitz blasted her second home run of the season to end the game early.
The Cardinal will continue play in the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic on Saturday with a double-header. Stanford will face Princeton at 2:30 p.m. before taking on Saint Mary's at 4:45 p.m. Saturday is Jessica Mendoza Day at Smith Family Stadium. The two-time Olympian and former Cardinal standout will be in attendance and signing autographs for fans.
