March 20, 2010

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - California ended the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships with a flourish, taking second place in the final relay by just .35 seconds to finish in third place overall on the last night of the NCAA on Saturday at Purdue's Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Golden Bears Hannah Wilson, Sara Isakovic, Erica Dagg and Liv Jensen clocked a time of 3:12.67 in the relay, which Stanford won with a time of 3:12.32. Florida, which was third in the relay (3:13.43), dethroned the Bears (363 points) and won the NCAA team title with 382 points. Stanford finished second (379.5).

Cal also picked up a pair of third-place finishes from senior Lauren Boyle in the 1650-yard freestyle and sophomore Liv Jensen in the 50 free earlier in the night.

Boyle, in her last competition as a Bear, took third in the first event of the night - the 1650 free. She posted a time of 15:59.57. The school record holder in the event (15:56.93), Boyle is still the only Bear to swim under 16 minutes in the 1650. Fellow senior Blake Hayter placed 37th in the final with a time of 16:41.25.

Jensen, a sophomore who won the 50-free NCAA title on March 18, posted a time of 47.77 to finish third in the 100 free tonight. Wilson, a junior, won the consolation final to take ninth with a time of 48.31, and Dagg, also a junior, was 15th in a time of 49.38.

In the 200 breaststroke A final, freshman Caitlin Leverenz clocked a time of 2:10.59 to wind up seventh. Senior Alexandra Ellis also made news in the consolation final, posting a time of 2:09.38 to break her own Cal record in the event. In the morning preliminary swim for the 200 breaststroke, Leverenz swam a personal-best time of 2:10.05. She remains in second place on Cal's all-time list.

Cal had one Bear collect All-America honors in the 200 butterfly, as Isakovic, a sophomore, posted a time of 1:55.52 to take eighth in the A final.

The Bears did not have anyone swim in the 200 backstroke finals, but senior Heather White posted a personal-best time of 1:57.01 to take 39th in the morning prelim. White also moved into eighth place on Cal's all-time 200-back list.
