Box Score

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The 18th-ranked Oregon State baseball team opened Saturday's doubleheader with a 7-5 victory over Maine in the first game at Goss Stadium.

Stefen Romero hit his second home run in as many games and Danny Hayes drove in two in his second consecutive start and the Beavers improved to 12-3 on the year, winning their sixth consecutive game.

Tyler Waldron made his fifth start of the season, and went six innings to improve to 3-1 on the year. Waldron scattered five hits and four runs while striking out seven. He was replaced by Kevin Rhoderick in the seventh.

Hayes started the game's scoring with a two-run double in the first, but Maine tied the game in the third on a two-run home run by leadoff batter Michael Fransoso.

The Beavers did not sit idle for long, however, taking the lead for good in the bottom half of the third. Adalberto Santos reached on a walk and moved to second when Michael Miller was caught stealing third. Romero then took a 3-2 from Maine starter Jeffrey Gibbs and blooped it to center, scoring Santos.

Santos then made it 4-2 in the fifth with another single, his second of the game. That lead moved to 6-2, when three batters later, Romero hit a towering home run down the left field line off Gibbs. It was Romero's fifth round tripper of the season and his second of the series.

Maine added two runs in the sixth to pull within two, 6-4, after a double to right from Tyler Patzalek that got runners in from first and second.

Patzalek drove in another run in the eighth, but Rhoderick, in his second inning of work, got two consecutive strikeouts with the bases loaded to end the inning with the Beavers up, 6-5.

Rob Folsom, however, gave the Beavers breathing room with a double down the right field line in the eighth for the 7-5 advantage. Folsom had entered the game the inning prior as a defensive replacement.

Both Santos and Romero had two hits to pace the Beavers, while the latter led OSU with three RBI.

Rhoderick went two full innings, allowing three hits and a run. The right-hander struck out five in his fifth appearance of the year.

Sam Gaviglio came on to earn the final out for his second save of the season.

With the loss, Maine dropped to 7-10 on the year.

The second game of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to start approximately 45 minutes after the completion of the first game. Tanner Robles gets the start for Oregon State against Maine's Steve Perakslis.
