Outdoor Track Season Begins at Trojan Invite and Dusty Lane Open

LOS ANGELES -- The Washington State track and field competitors shook the indoor cobwebs off Saturday at two outdoor meets: in Los Angeles at the USC Trojan Invitational and at the Community Colleges of Spokane Dusty Lane Open meet at SFCC.
In LA, WSU junior All-American Marissa Tschida won the women's javelin throw with a heave of 172-feet, 8 inches (52.63m), just nine feet of her school record toss of 181-8 thrown last year and will place her in the top three if not the national lead in the event to date. Courtney Kirkwood tossed the spear 155-4 (47.36m) and Jennifer Hamilton threw the javelin 150-6 (45.87m), for fourth and fifth places, respectively. Kjirsten Jensen threw the hammer 170-3 (51.89m) for eighth place in the 'A' section, just four feet off her lifetime best mark, and Cassie Whitfield won the 'B' section with a PR toss of 166-9 (50.83m), over five feet more than her previous best. Ashley Kenney threw the discus a distance of 153-1 (46.66m).
The Cougar men's throwers also threw well today. All-American Matt Lamb was second in the discus with a toss of 185-5 (56.53m), with Joe Bartlett seventh with a seven-foot PR throw of 167-9 (51.15m), and Jacob Weintraub 13th after throwing 142-9 (43.53m). Bartlett also threw a PR in the shot put with a second-place heave of 55-4 3/4 (16.88m) while Weintraub finished fourth with a mark of 54-8 (16.66m). Freshman Kyle Stevens took third place in the javelin with a throw of 199-6 (60.82m) and Mark Presby was fourth after throwing the spear 183-8 (55.99m).
On the track, WSU women sprinters took advantage of the warm temperatures. Princess Joy Griffey took second in the 100m with a time of 11.91 seconds and third in the 200m with a time of 24.17. Jacki Hill ran a PR time in the 200m of 25.81 and Brianne Brown ran a time of 26.40. Shawna Fermin was the top Cougar in the 400m dash with a time of 55.59 followed by Hill (57.03) and Brown (57.74). Anna Layman finished fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:15.14. The 4x400m relay squad of Veronica Elseroad-Wall, Fermin, Griffey and Layman was second in a time of 3:46.30.
Caroline Hedel finished third in the 400m hurdles with a PR time of 61.95 and Brittnay Crabb was fourth in a time of 62.21. Shaquana Logan clocked a 100m hurdles time of 14.31 and Jalisa Williams was time at 14.93.
Also at USC, the Cougar men established some early sprint marks. Freshman Greg Hornsby took third place in the 200m dash with a time of 21.81. Brett Blanshan ran a 100m time of 11.01 and a 200m time of 22.59 while Devin Giles ran 11.244 and 22.68 in the dashes. The 4x100m relay team of Blanshan, Nate Washington, Hornsby and Marlon Murray ran a time of 41.50 for fourth place.
Two-time NCAA intermediate hurdles champion Jeshua Anderson ran a training race in the 800m today with a time of 1:52.86 which was fifth-best in the race. Dana Wells did run the 400m hurdles today with a time of 53.82.
The results from the SCC Dusty Lane Open will be published when available.
Next weekend several Cougars will be competing at the Stanford Invitational.
