Arizona Falls to Texas A&M

MARANA, Ariz. - The first round of the Callaway Match Play Championship teed off this morning at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Course at Dove Mountain, a par 72, 7,833-yard layout and 14-seeded Arizona was pit against Texas A&M, seeded third. Arizona was defeated by Texas A&M 3-2 Sunday.
MacManus won the first two holes en route to three-stroke lead with two holes to play over Texas A&M number one golfer Andrea Pavan. Khan was down only one hole with four to play before losing a close match to Cameron Peck 2 and 1. Saferian led Jordan Russell the whole way, defeating Texas A&M's number three golfer 5 and 3. Ignacio Elvira defeated Redfern 5 and 4, while Bagdade fell to Conrad Shindler 4 and 3.
Arizona will face defending-champion Middle Tennessee State in the first round of the consolation bracket.
Number one seed Stanford defeated 16-seed Indiana 3-2 and will move on to face eight-seeded USC, which was victorious over ninth-seeded TCU 4-1. Pac-10 programs Arizona State and UCLA, the fourth and fifth seeds respectively, will meet in the consolation bracket after they each lost their first round match ups to lower seeds. ASU fell to 13-seeded Iowa and UCLA lost to 12th-seed Colorado State. Texas A&M will face UNLV, victor over Middle Tennessee State. The number two seed Washington was upset in the first round by 15th-seed New Mexico 3-2. The Lobos will face another double-digit seed, (10) San Diego, which beat seven-seed Texas Tech.
The second round and first round of the consolation bracket teed off at about 2:30 p.m. PST today. The third round will be held tomorrow, March 22, 2010 at 9:30 a.m., and the fourth and final round at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday. All teams will play four matches regardless of the previous results.
