FULLERTON, Calif. -- A two-run home run in the first inning by Nicole Koren was the only hit of the game for Virginia, but it held up in a 2-1 Cavalier win over No. 2 Arizona on Sunday.
With one out, Koren took the 1-2 offering to right field after Giannina Cipolloni had led off the game with a walk.
Kenzie Fowler (16-2) took the loss, though she struck out six and walked three. After the homer, she retired 20 of the next 22 batters.
Virginia's Melanie Mitchell (10-9) scattered seven hits, walked three and struck out six in the win.
Lauren Schutzler led off the Arizona seventh with a single, but K'Lee Arredondo grounded into a fielder's choice, Stacie Chambers popped out and Brigette Del Ponte ripped a comebacker into Mitchell's glove to close the game.
Virginia improved to 14-12 on the season.
For the third straight season, Arizona finished the Judi Garman Classic with a 3-2 record.
Arizona heads to New Mexico for a three game set with the Lobos beginning Friday.
