MARANA, Ariz. - The No. 15 seeded New Mexico men's golf reversed the playing field against the No. 2 seeded Washington Huskies and beat them 3-2 in the first round of the Calloway Collegiate Golf Match Play one day after the Husky basketball team upset the Lobos in the second round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Seniors Nick Taylor and Chris Killmer won their matches on Dove Mountain at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club, but Richard Lee, Charlie Hughes and Chris Williams each dropped their matches.

'We're really disappointed that we didn't win,' said Husky coach Matt Thurmond. 'We had a couple guys play really well, but you have to have three guys. It was a lot like last year at the NCAA's where we had two guys go real big, but we just couldn't pull out that third point.'

Washington lost to Arkansas, 3-2, in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Taylor beat James Erkenbeck, 4 and 3, in the No. 1 match, while Killmer held off Brandon Putnam, 4 and 2, in the No. 5 spot. Taylor strung together three-straight holes on the front nine to take control of his match and iced his opponent with a birdie on No. 6 (the teams teed off from No. 10).

Killmer won the final four holes of the first nine to jump out to a four-stroke lead and held on down the stretch to earn the Huskies a point.

The other three matches were tight to the finish and were decided at the No. 2 spot where Lee was eliminated on the final hole by Travis Ross. The match was all square through 11 holes before Ross took the lead and never relinquished it. Lee had his chance to even the score on the final hole, but Ross birdied it and Lee parred to finish two holes behind.

Hughes led his match for most of the front nine before conceding the lead and see-sawing back and forth during the final seven holes. Nick Geyer eventually won 2 and 1 after he birdied the 16th and 17th holes.

Williams trailed for most of his match but had a chance to come back down the stretch. Unfortunately, down one hole to John Catlin, he carded a bogey-6 on No. 8 and conceded his match, 2 and 1.

The Huskies match against Texas Tech in the consolation bracket was halted due to darkness. The Red Raiders led 3-1-1 with four holes remaining, but two matches by only one hole and the other by two.
