March 22, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON sophomore outfielder/designated player Taylor Smith was named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week and STANFORD freshman pitcher Teagan Gerhart was named Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for March 15-21, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Smith, a native of Olympia, Wash., had two outstanding games over the weekend for the No. 1-ranked Huskies. She was a combined five-of-seven in two games played over the weekend, with four of her five hits going for home runs. She drove in a total of 13 runs in two games, hitting two grand slams and a pair of two-run shots. In an 8-0 win over Utah she went three-for-three with five RBI and a pair of two-run shots. On Sunday, Smith topped her Saturday performance, hitting two grand slams to give her eight RBI in the game, tying the Washington single-game record originally set in 1993. She also became the first Husky in school history to hit two grand slams in a single game. For the weekend she slugged 1.889 and finished with a .556 average (five-for-nine).
Gerhart was lights out for the Cardinal over the weekend, throwing three-straight no-hitters, beginning with her first career perfect game in an 8-0 win over Santa Clara on Friday. The Norco, Calif. native threw a career-high 13 strikeouts, including eight in a row to finish off the perfect game. On Saturday, in a 7-0 win over Princeton, she struck out eight batters for the complete game shutout and was just one team error short of a second perfect game. She also earned her first career hit, an RBI double. Gerhart finished off Saturday with an 8-0 win over Saint Mary’s, throwing six strikeouts in five innings of work. She also went 2-3 from the plate against the Gaels, including her first career home run. On Sunday Gerhart finished up a stellar Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic with a win over Cal Poly and earned her first career save against Saint Mary’s. For the weekend Gerhart tossed 26.0 scoreless innings, with 34 strikeouts an allowed just one walk and three hits to finish with a 0.00 ERA.
This is Smith’s first career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and the 73nd for Washington all-time. It is also Gerhart’s first career honor and and Stanford’s 46th all-time.
