Softball Tops Titans in Suspended Game

March 23, 2010

Fullerton, Calif. - The Oregon State softball team (13-14) scored four runs on six hits on Tuesday evening to add to its 4-2 suspended lead from Sunday, Mar. 7, to top the Cal State Fullerton Titans (5-26) at Anderson Family Field to finally wrap up play in the CSUF DiMarini Invitational.

Sophomore Mary Claire Brenner (Portland, Ore.) led the Beavers with a 2-for-3 effort with a double, while freshman Lea Cavestany (Pittsburg, Calif.) posted a 2-for-3 outing with three RBI on a single and a double. Senior Tarah Black (Portland, Ore.) went 2-for-3 with a double and a single, scoring three runs.

The Beavers took the early 2-0 lead thanks to another junior Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) home run over left center to Cavestany (Pittsburg, Calif.), who led off the inning with a walk.

Fullerton tied things up in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run single by Kadie Baldwin through the right side past an outstretched freshman Ally Kutz (Mt. Vernon, Wash.) at first base. But Oregon State regained the lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run hit to center field by Cavestany that was just inches from sailing over the fence to score senior Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.), who walked, and Black, who reached on an error by third baseman Sheila Holguin, giving the Beavers a 4-2 edge.

With two outs and a runner on second, the game was delayed over 30 minutes due to rain with a strong downpour ensuing in the bottom of the fourth forcing the game to be suspended and resumed on Tuesday, March 23, at 8:17 p.m.

The Beavers tacked on another run in the top of the sixth on Cavestany's double down the left field line to score Black, who led off the inning with a single up the middle to give Oregon State the 5-2 lead after six complete.

Black and senior Alana Ford (Chula Vista, Calif.) scored three runs in the top of the seventh. Black's one-out double to left field scored Chisholm, who earned an infield single. Sophomore Nikki Chandler (Houston, Texas) walked before both Black and Chandler advanced into scoring position on a ground out. With two outs, Ford hit one back at pitcher Ari Cervantes to score both runners, earning her first hit of the season and giving the Beavers the 8-2 advantage, only needing three outs for it to stick.

Sophomore pitcher Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) earned the complete game win to improve to 9-12 on the season, striking out eight. Cal State Fullerton's Cervantes was charged with the complete game loss, falling to 2-13.

Oregon State returns home to host Seattle on Friday in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. at the OSU Softball Complex. Follow these games live through GameTracker or on Twitter - OregonStateSB.
