UCLA's Trevor Bauer, Gerrit Cole Named to Pitcher of the Year Watch List
March 23, 2010
LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore right-handers Trevor Bauer and Gerrit Cole have been selected to the initial watch list for the 2010 Pitcher of the Year award, as announced Tuesday by the College Baseball Foundation. Bauer (4-0) and Cole (5-0) have helped lead No. 9 UCLA to a 16-0 start this season.
The sophomore duo of Cole and Bauer rank first and second, respectively, in strikeouts in the Pac-10 Conference, through Monday, March 22. Cole has gone 5-0 with a 2.20 ERA in a team-high 32.2 innings. Bauer has posted a 4-0 record and 2.05 ERA through 30.2 innings.
Both pitchers were selected as National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball on March 15, after having registered 15 strikeouts in each of their respective starts the previous weekend at the Whataburger College Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas. Cole fanned 15 batters against Texas A&M Corpus Christi in a 11-3 victory on March 12, before Bauer notched 15 strikeouts in a 5-2 win over Mississippi State on March 13.
Cole has become UCLA's first starting pitcher to earn a victory in each of his first five starts in a season since 2004, when Casey Janssen (currently on the Toronto Blue Jays) accomplished that feat.
Bauer secured Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time in his career on March 15, after having been named the Tournament MVP at the Whataburger College Classic.
The 49-name watch list includes more pitchers from the Pac-10 Conference (nine) than any other conference in the nation. Also joining Bauer and Cole from the Pac-10 include Arizona State's Jake Borup, Mitchell Lambson and Josh Spence, California's Erik Johnson, Oregon's Tyler Anderson and Oregon State's Greg Peavey and Tanner Robles.
The Pitcher of the Year award will be presented in Lubbock, Texas, on July 2 as part of the College Baseball Awards Show.
