Spring Practice Preview -- Quarterback

March 25, 2010

Corvallis, Ore. -

It’s going to be odd this spring to not see a No. 3 (Lyle Moevao) or a No. 5 (Sean Canfield) behind center, but that’s reality, as head coach Mike Riley eases a new starter into the quarterback role.

Sophomore Ryan Katz enters the session taking the first reps, but Riley has made it clear to not read a lot into that just yet.

“Whenever there is a changing of the guard at quarterback; that’s big news and a big issue,” Riley said.  “I felt over the last year we have had these guys (QBs) spaced out pretty good; last year we had two seniors, two intermediate guys and two young guys redshirting – that’s a good picture.  Now, it’s a big factor, but at least we have two guys who are a little older, been in the program and have the talent to play.  Katz will have the first turns, but we are going to go into spring without any preconceived notions and just let these guys play.”

Katz is the only player on the roster to take a game snap as a Beaver, completing 14 of 27 pass attempts in a backup role last season.  Junior Peter Lalich, who transferred from Virginia is September of 2008, started two games during his career with the Cavaliers.

“We probably will come out of spring ball with some determination of who our starter is, but maybe not as we don’t necessarily have to make that call right away,” Riley said.  “The competition will probably carry on like it has before into the fall.  I like the talent at quarterback, we will see who emerges.  In reality it’s about as good of a situation as we could hope for when you consider we lost two starters who won a lot of games for us.”

Most of the attention will be on Katz and Lalich, but two redshirt-freshmen will via for possible playing time as well as Cody Vaz and Jack Lomax were both leaders on the scout team last season.  True freshman Sean Mannion will join the team in August.

It will definitely be an interesting spring, with more eyes on this position than in recent years.  But, for this group of quarterbacks the transition will not be as great of a hurdle as it could be with 10 starters returning on offense.
