Stanford Men Set For Copley Cup Action At San Diego Crew Classic

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's rowing heads to sunny San Diego Saturday and Sunday for its second weekend of action in the spring portion of the 2009-10 season. The Cardinal will have three boats participating at the San Diego Crew Classic beginning at 8:40 a.m.
'San Diego represents intense pre-season racing,' said Stanford Director of Rowing and men's head coach Craig Amerkhanian. 'Our teams will be racing fiercely for two consecutive days. The goals are to improve daily and develop traction as we kick off our 2010 spring season'.
The Cardinal Varsity 8+ will take to the water in its pursuit for the Copley Cup at 8:40 a.m. Saturday against Brown, Northeastern, Michigan, UC Davis and University of San Diego. In the other heat of the I Eight competition are California, Boston University, Syracuse, Temple and UC San Diego. The top three finishers from each heat will face off in the Copley Cup Grand Final on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
The Cardinal men's Varsity 8+ previously captured the Copley Cup two straight times from 2006-07.
'The varsity eight will race without US U23 national team member Sebastian Peterlin,' Amerkhanian added. 'We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to have him back for our Stanford/Cal Invitational on April 17. The entire squad has stepped up and raised their game to cover for Seb.'
'Cal, Brown, Boston U, Northeastern, Syracuse and Michigan will present a strong challenge in the Copley Cup,' Amerkhanian added.
Stanford's Novice 8+ races at 9:40 a.m. Saturday morning against UC Irvine, Loyola, University of San Diego, UC Santa Barbara 'B' and Sonoma State. The top two boats from this heat will advance to race in the Novice 8+ Grand Final on Sunday at 10:10 a.m.
At 10:40 a.m., the JV8+ will race against Boston University, UC San Diego,UC Davis, UC Irvine, and the University of San Diego. The other heat sees California, Brown, Orange Coast, Trinity College, Washington State, Notre Dame and Santa Clara in action. The top three boats from each heat will advance to race in Sunday's JV8+ Grand Final at 9:50 a.m.
