Chesimet Breaks 25-year old Record for Career Day

STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Abby Chesimet broke a 25-year old record in the 5,000 meter by over 10 seconds at the Stanford Invitational Friday at Cobb Track and Angell Field in Stanford, Calif.

Chesimet ran a time of 16:37.99 in the 5,000 meter Friday to shatter Kathy Knowlton's 25-year old record by more than 10 seconds. The old record was 16:48.28. With her time Friday, Chesimet lowered her personal best by over 29 seconds.

It was a split squad day for the Oregon State women's track team Friday as eight competitors traveled to Stanford, Calif. to participate in the Stanford Invitational while 13 others competed in the San Francisco State Distance Carnival in San Francisco, Calif.

'We had a tremendous weekend with a lot of people dropping their personal bests and Abby Chesimet breaking the school record in the 5,000,' Oregon State women's track head coach Kelly Sullivan said following the meet. 'The trip was well worth it for our team with the experience that our younger

Redshirt sophomore Laura Carlyle finished fourth in the section 4 race of the 1,500 meter event at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 4:27.40. Her time places her second all-time at Oregon State in the event.

Also in the fourth sectional of the 1,500 meter race at the Stanford Invitational, redshirt senior Sylvia Veal finished 11th for the section with a time of 4:35.88. The 1,500 meter run had the most participants at the Stanford Invitational and needed seven sections to fit everyone in.

Casey Masterson finished fifth in the third sectional of the 1,500 meter at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 4:29.58. It was Masterson's first race in nearly 10 months and almost went down after getting entangled with a runner from BYU but kept her balance but it probably cost her several seconds.

At the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, freshman Ariel Clark finished third in the 2 mile run with at time of 11:40.85. Fellow freshman Taylor Nowlin finished fifth and redshirt freshman Lorine Cruz finished 11th with times of 11:46.64 and 12:04.63 respectively.

Freshman Lauren Graebner finished third in the section 2 running of the 1,500 meter at the Distance Carnival with a time of 4:53.83 which was good enough for 12th overall for the event.

Freshman Olivia Poblacion ran, for the first time in her career, the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Distance Carnival and finished 10th overall with a time of 11:32.62. Her time places her in the top-10 all-time at Oregon State in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Also at the Distance Carnival, freshman Taylor Hunt finished third overall in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:16.16. Ashley Mayfield finished seventh overall with a time of 2:18.93. Ashley Berry and Kristin Oenning finished ninth and 11th in the third section of the 800 meter run with times of 2:20.82 and 2:23.80 respectively.

And in the final event of the day at the Distance Carnival, junior Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson finished seventh overall in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 17:29.89.

Oregon State will next hit the track next Friday and Saturday, April 2-3 at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore.
