No. 21 Trojans Nip No. 19 Huskies Late In Heartbreaker
March 26, 2010
LOS ANGELES - On the verge of making it two straight wins at USC, the Husky women's tennis team couldn't quite close out the victory and suffered a 5-2 setback at Marks Stadium. Washington (9-3, 1-2 Pac-10) was returning to the site of its upset win in the NCAA second round last year, and was in position for a repeat performance before the Trojans (10-6, 2-0 Pac-10) rallied to win the final two matches.
The Trojans led 3-2, however junior Venise Chan had match point in the second set against 3rd-ranked Maria Sanchez at No. 1 singles, and senior Joyce Ardies led Sarah Fansler, 4-1, in the third set, so things were leaning UW's way. Sanchez however saved the match points down 5-6 to force a tiebreak which she won seven points to three. Meanwhile, Fansler rallied to take six of the final seven games and clinch the match 7-5, 0-6, 7-5. With the outcome decided, Sanchez then pulled away late in the third to complete a 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 comeback win over Chan at No. 1.
Still, the day did bring one huge positive for the Huskies, as sophomore Denise Dy returned to the lineup with a bang after missing UW's last match against Arizona State with a foot injury. Dy, ranked sixth in the country, demolished 20th-ranked Alison Ramos, 6-0, 6-0, at second singles. Dy improves to 21-3 on the year, and it is her fifth win this year over a player currently ranked in the Top-20.
Senior Aleksandra Malovic also came through with a very impressive 6-1, 6-2 win over Leyla Entekhabi at No. 6 singles for UW's second point of the day.
USC took the early lead with a sweep in doubles. Sanchez and Danielle Lao handed the 11th-ranked pair of Ardies and Dy their first dual loss of the year, 8-6, at the No. 1 spot. Washington also led 6-4 at No. 3 doubles but USC's Fansler and Lyndsay Kinstler came back to beat Malovic and Lina Xu, 8-6.
The Huskies will look to shake off the tough ending of today's match and head across town to face the 5th-ranked UCLA Bruins on Saturday in a 12 noon match-up.
