Distance Squads Show Off In Palo Alto
March 27, 2010
PALO ALTO, Calif. - The University of Arizona's distance team took part in the Stanford Relays in Palo Alto, Calif. this weekend, the first major meet of the season for that portion of the UA's track and field team.
Junior Maggie Callahan highlighted the weekend as she posted a huge personal best in the 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing sixth overall in 10:25.14. The time was five seconds better than her previous best and puts her third on the UA's all-time top ten list. Also of note about the result is the fact that since arriving at the UA three years ago, Callahan has set a personal best in the event in all but two races – an incredible sign of the progress she has made over the years.
Sophomore Hannah Moen finished 12th in the fast section of the race with a time of 10:46.74.
On the men's side, senior Bran MacArthur also shined in the steeplechase as he, too, smashed his previous personal best. MacArthur won his section of the race in 8:58.54, around eight seconds better than his previous best.
Redshirt sophomore Abdi Hassan started the season off with a bang in the 1500-meter run as he finished fourth overall and first among collegiate athletes with his time of 3:44.32. Hassan will likely play a key role for the Wildcats both at the conference and national level in the event as the season rolls on. Saturday's performance served as an impressive start to the sophomore's campaign.
The Wildcats will be back in action next weekend as they host their second and final home meet of the season with the Jim Click Shootout at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
