Vanessa Zamarripa Named Pac-10 Gymnast Of The Year
March 27, 2010
UCLA sophomore Vanessa Zamarripa (O'Fallon, IL) was named the Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year, becoming only the sixth sophomore to win the award.
Zamarripa, who also won the Pac-10 all-around and vault titles, has been one of the nation's top competitors this season, ranking third nationally in the all-around and in the Top 10 on all four events. Entering the week, her season average of 39.579 was the best in the nation, and she leads the team with 23 individual victories - seven on beam, six in the all-around, five on vault and two each on bars and floor. She earned Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week honors three times and Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week honors twice this season. Zamarripa scored a perfect 10 on vault at Cal State Fullerton in February and already ranks sixth all-time at UCLA with four career perfect 10s.
Zamarripa is the first sophomore to win Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year honors since UCLA's Jamie Dantzscher did in 2002. Other sophomores to win the award are UCLA's Tanya Service (1987), UCLA's Jill Andrews (1988), Oregon State's Chari Knight (1992), and UCLA's Leah Homma (1995). Zamarripa's award is the 17th ever for a UCLA gymnast.
